IIC FAQ
What Is Intuitive Interspecies Communication?
Intuitive interspecies communication (IIC) is a natural, innate capacity shared by all animals - including humans - that allows for direct, two-way communication with other beings through intuitive, non-verbal means.
This form of communication involves engaging our intuitive awareness to receive and share thoughts, emotions, images, sensations, and messages from other animals, plants, fungi, the Elements, Land, Water, and all of Nature.
Communication can take place across distances and does not require physical presence, making IIC widely accessible. While often described as energetic or telepathic, IIC is a way of listening beyond words - with openness, presence, and respect for the lives, relationships, and perspectives of the more-than-human world.
What Isn't Intuitive Interspecies Communication?
Intuitive interspecies communication (IIC) is distinct from communication based on observation, species behaviour, or vocalisation.
It is also distinct from human-designed communication tools and technologies - such as augmentative communication devices, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. While these approaches can support communication, they rely on systems created by humans rather than the intuitive exchange that IIC facilitates.
IIC is not about interpreting or projecting human meaning onto other animals, Plants, Land, or Nature. It is a process of mutual listening that seeks to move beyond control, assumption, and human-centred interpretation.
How Does Intuitive Interspecies Communication Work?
IIC works through engaging our intuitive awareness… the capacity to receive information beyond our physical senses.
This can include:
Thoughts and mental impressions (words, phrases, knowing)
Emotions and felt-sense (what another being is experiencing emotionally)
Images and visual information (seeing what they see, or receiving symbolic imagery)
Physical sensations (feeling what they feel in the body, or sensing the aliveness of Land, Water, ecosystems)
Energetic presence (sensing their state, intention, or relational field)
The process is relational and reciprocal. It's not one-sided transmission, rather a dialogue, a back-and-forth exchange where both beings contribute to the communication.
Communication with Nature is as varied as Nature itself. A conversation with a companion animal may feel different from listening to a Forest, a River, or the Mycelial Network beneath your feet. Each being, whether fauna, flora, fungal, elemental, or geological, has their own intelligence, language, and way of relating.
IIC requires:
Presence - being fully attentive, grounded, and open
Respect - honouring the autonomy, intelligence, and perspective of the other being
Humility - recognising that we are interconnected and interdependent
Practice - deepening the skill through consistent, intentional engagement
Who Can Engage With Intuitive Interspecies Communication?
Everyone.
IIC is not a rare gift reserved for a select few. It's an innate capacity that all animals, including humans, share. Many people experience communication naturally in childhood, or in moments of deep connection with the more-than-human.
However, most of us have been conditioned to dismiss, doubt, or ignore this capacity.
Cultural narratives, educational systems, and dominant paradigms often teach us that:
- Other animals don't have complex inner lives
- Plants, fungi, ecosystems, and the Elements are passive "resources," not conscious beings
- Only humans possess language, consciousness, or agency
- Communication requires spoken words or observable signals
- Intuitive knowing is unreliable, imaginary, or "unscientific"
Re-engaging with IIC often requires unlearning these assumptions and reawakening a capacity that was always present.
Anyone willing to:
- Listen with openness and humility
- Question their assumptions about the more-than-human
- Practice attuning to subtler forms of communication
Honour what they receive without needing it to be "proven"
...can engage with IIC.
How Is Intuitive Interspecies Communication Used in Practice?
IIC is used in a wide range of contexts, both personal and professional.
Personal contexts:
- Understanding the needs, feelings, and perspectives of companion animals
- Deepening relationship with the living world
- Navigating health, behavioural, or relational challenges with other animals
- Listening to the living world you live with or steward
- Cultivating reciprocal relationship with the more-than-human world
Professional and collaborative contexts:
- Supporting veterinary care, rehabilitation, and animal welfare
- Informing conservation strategies and wildlife management
- Guiding land stewardship, regenerative agriculture, watershed restoration, and ecosystem healing
- Enhancing research methodologies in animal behaviour, ecology, and plant intelligence
- Advising policy, advocacy, and decision-making processes that affect other beings and ecosystems
- Facilitating interspecies collaboration in organisational and community settings
Consulting with Nature and ecosystems in infrastructure, development, and environmental projects
IIC is not a replacement for observation-based knowledge, scientific research, or Indigenous wisdom traditions. It is a complementary approach that can deepen understanding, reveal nuance, and centre the voices of those most affected by human decisions.
Is Intuitive Interspecies Communication a New Concept or Long-Standing Practice?
Both.
Intuitive interspecies communication is not new. It has been practiced… often under different names… across cultures, spiritual traditions, and Indigenous knowledge systems for millennia.
Many Indigenous communities have always known that other animals, plants, fungi, Land, Water, Stones, and the Elements are conscious, communicative beings. Their relationships with the more-than-human world are rooted in direct, reciprocal communication that Western science is only beginning to acknowledge.
In modern Western contexts, IIC as a named practice emerged more recently… particularly over the past several decades… as people began reclaiming intuitive capacities that had been marginalised or dismissed by dominant paradigms.
What IS new is the growing recognition of IIC's relevance in professional, scientific, and policy contexts, along with the emergence of frameworks that integrate IIC with research, conservation, advocacy, and systems change.
This is not about inventing something that didn't exist. It's about:
- Honouring what has always been present
- Making space for intuitive knowing alongside empirical knowledge
- Centring the voices of other animals, plants, Land, Water, and all of Nature in the systems and decisions that affect them
How Can I Learn More?
If you're drawn to explore intuitive interspecies communication further, whether for personal practice, professional application, or collaborative inquiry, there are several pathways:
For those new to IIC:
- Begin with simple, consistent practice, sitting quietly with other animals, plants, Land, Water, or in Nature, asking questions, and noticing what arises
- Trust what you receive, even if it feels uncertain or unfamiliar at first
- Read books, attend workshops (online or in-person), or seek mentorship from experienced, ethical practitioners
For professionals integrating IIC into their work:
- Explore how IIC might complement and deepen your existing expertise
- Consider collaborative inquiry models that include multiple ways of knowing
- Connect with interdisciplinary networks advancing interspecies collaboration
